Katie Patterson, Happy Medium
Katie Patterson founded Happy Medium, an interactive advertising agency with two guiding principles: honesty and transparency. With a strong background in media buying and account management, Katie launched and bootstrapped Happy Medium after seeing a need for an authentic approach in the market. Since its inception in 2011, the company has expanded to accommodate its ever-growing list of clients, services and employees, but its guiding principles have stayed at the center of all that Katie and Happy Medium do, while simultaneously achieving more than 800 percent revenue growth in just four years.
While headquartered in Des Moines, Happy Medium’s offerings aren’t limited to a physical location, which allows it to serve clients of various sizes and in different industries and locations. The agency works hard to represent its clients with integrity and stays at the forefront of the latest trends and innovations across both traditional and digital advertising as well as now offering website development, graphic design, public relations, SEO/SEM, social media strategy, and user experience (UX) research. Never one to rest on her laurels, Katie launched her first product, Happy Boards, a pioneering digital signage software, in 2015. The process helped her determine Happy Medium should include a place for creativity and inspiration in order to create solutions that not only answer needs of her agency but for businesses worldwide.
Outside of work, Katie enjoys spending time with her son, Brig, and her English bulldog, Georgia. She also loves to cook, travel, stay active, volunteer and be involved in her community.
Larry Cotlar, Author of “Biggest Rolodex in Sports”
Larry Cotlar named the Iowa Sportscaster of the Year in 2007 by the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters. He is also in the media wing of the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Sports Hall of Fame. Cotlar, now in his 45th year as a radio broadcaster, has been the radio play-by-play voice of the Drake men’s basketball team since 2005. He has been involved in Iowa Barnstormer football broadcasts and telecasts since 2009 and is the sports analyst for the CWIowa Live television show on KCWI-TV in Des Moines. Cotlar also added the title of author to his credits with the release of “The Biggest Rolodex in Sports” in July 2015. Now in his 35th year in sports talk radio, Cotlar is currently the host of the “Cotlar and Company” radio show on 1350 ESPN in Des Moines.
Matt Wagner, West Bank
Matt Wagner is a native of Cedar Falls. He grew up like millions of other boys across the country with a dream of becoming a major league baseball player. His journey spanned the entire country and even through parts of our Canadian neighbors to the north. Matt started his college days at the University of Arkansas and eventually ended up at Iowa State University. He was drafted a total of three times. The first time by the Atlanta Braves out of high school, a second time by the Los Angeles Dodgers after a redshirt season, and the third time in the third round by the Seattle Mariners. He advanced through the minor league system with stops in Appleton, Wisconsin, Wilmington, North Carolina, and Tacoma, Washington. All in addition to spending spring trainings in Arizona and Florida. Following numerous setbacks, Matt achieved his dream when he made his debut against the Cleveland Indians. Injuries would plague his career, but taught him valuable life lessons along the way.
Matt has been with West Bank since 2010. He has been in banking since his baseball days ended and has been on the business banking side during his entire tenure. Matt is responsible for managing and growing his customer base. He enjoys helping his customers achieve their goals by assisting with financing structure and managing cash flow cycles. Matt is active with the Urbandale Lions Club (outgoing president), Vice-Chair of the Taxpayers Association of Central Iowa, and you are likely to find him at a baseball field teaching baseball to his own, as well as other kids, throughout the year. He has been married for 21 years to his wife, Cari. They have three children, Maddie, a sophomore at Iowa Central in Fort Dodge and member of the softball team, Hayden, 11 years old and excellent at math, and Reagan, 7 years old and full of energy. Matt has a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Iowa State University.
Kimberly Baeth, Golden Openings
In 1997, Kimberly Baeth started her business Golden Openings, Inc. and invented the original giant scissors that really cut, wide ribbon, big bows, keys to the city, gold shovels, chrome shovels, ground breaking items and keepsakes, unique awards and gifts, for special events. They are the first and original “Grand Opening Super Store”. She has written 3 books and sells her products and services all over the world.
Golden Openings, Inc, ships out 100’s of packages each day to businesses and has shipped to 6 of the 7 continents. They coordinate and average at least 5 local events each week, including the Grand Openings/Ground Breakings for: Facebook, Microsoft, Homemakers, Life Time Athletic, Bob Brown Chevrolet, The Central Iowa Shelter & Services, Wells Fargo and Dart, just to name a few.
She has worked with and done events for: The White House, Oprah, Disney, Lady Gaga, Apple, Google, Microsoft, many colleges, universities, professional sports teams, movies, many fortune 500 companies, restaurants, TV shows, and more. She also helped orchestrate and set a world record for the longest ribbon cutting (4.5 miles of continuous ribbon) in Cutler Bay, FL in December 2011. The event is in the Guinness Book of World Records. They recently broke the record at the Joplin Schools Ribbon Cutting, in MO, last year. Over 8,000 Chambers own her scissors.
She moved her family from the Twin Cities to Iowa in August 2006. She currently has three franchises of Golden Openings, Inc., in California, Minnesota and New Jersey. After 19 years, she has grown her niche business that bought in over 2 million in sales in 2015. She has 4 full time and 15 part-time employees and offers internships and school to work programs yearly. She recently purchased a 10,000 square foot warehouse to store her inventory and supplies and opened a 2nd location and warehouse in Urbandale, last year. She and her company have received several entrepreneur and business awards, including:
